After what seems like only yesterday that we returned from Vancouver and had a chance to decompress we decided to sit down and discuss what we thought of this new convention here in Canada.

I love coming home from a trip feeling more unrested than when I left, and I think it means it was fulfilling or that I had too many beers. hmmm, maybe it was both.

I’ll start by listing off the great speakers from the event and you can check out their site on the links, but not before you listen to the podcast .

I think I speak for all the attendees when I say that this was truly an inspiring and educational event that will only help our business and help shape our mindset and our craft. I also thought the bus trip after-party was like going to vegas for 30 minutes, but what goes on the bus, stays on the bus!

After another short break we’re back again with a great recap of the new Mark iii. We decided to cool off and rethink things and now that Kelly has his new camera he’s had a chance to look it over and see what all the fuss was about. It’s also worth checking out this review I found on youtube with the head to head comparisons between the d800 and the Mark iii. It’s pretty safe to say that both Nikon and Canon addressed some important needs of the user.

We also discuss our upcoming trip to Vancouver to attend the first ever Canada Photo Convention. Jammed packed with amazing talent and speakers it’s bound to be the new can’t miss event in Canada.

There’s so much more stuff loaded in this podcast, and you’ll probably wonder how you survived while we were away. If you have anything you’d like us to discuss, or anybody that you think we should interview please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll do our very best to help out!

EPISODE 32 // A Wild Ride at WPPI 2012

WPPI 2012 is just wrapping up as I type this, and our latest account of the goings on is now ready for you to hear! There were some FANTASTIC speakers this year, some incredible moments, and a few that frankly we could have lived without. Taken as a whole, this years WPPI was once again a smashing success, and we discuss all the things we saw and did, review some of our favorite speakers, go over some of our favourite products, and attempt to sound coherent after 4 days of little sleep, over indulgence, and coming down with a nasty case of Vegas SARS. If you were here, or if you sat this one out, take a listen.

Of the many products both Kelly and I saw I also must say that first hand you should try out the Album Exposure album proofing software. Alone or along with any of your album design workflow it is simply the easiest and client friendly software I’ve used. You can find their webiste here and they allow you two free albums to share to see if you like it.

As this was recorded on the second to last day of WPPI 2012 we will have a follow up podcast discussing our thoughts and feelings after having a few days to absorb everything we saw. So please stay tuned and we’ll have a complete wrap up.

We finally saw the d800 released today and I’m still reeling from the massive file size, a whopping 36 megapixels. Listen to the latest podcast and you can hear a grown man cry! I’ve waited 4 years for this camera to come out and now I just have to scratch my head.

Our latest episode. SEO. It’s a huge topic, one super relevant to all photographers. You should listen to this one. And all the other ones too of course.

Oh, and on a more tech-related note – the sound quality of the recording suffered a bit on this episode. Perhaps it was the Scotch. We have tweaked the audio to help make it louder (we did some learning), but if you hear anything you think is odd, or garble-y, well, it’s probably my fault.

Boy can we talk shop! In this inspiring episode we reflect on wrapping up our wedding season and touch on rebranding and improving on our corporate communication. It doesn’t stop there gang, no way. We also talk about the lenses we choose to use on any given shoot and posing. Great poses such as Owling…you’ll have to listen to have any idea what the heck that is!

Have you ever heard of Toastmasters? Kelly and I now have our toastmaster pins (it means we joined) and we thought this was a nifty opportunity to discuss the benifits of working on our public speaking skills. You’d be silly to miss this episode.

EPISODE 27 // D4 ANNOUNCEMENT! HUGE NEWS FOR NIKON USERS!

What more can we say? Today was the long awaited announcement from Nikon containing information about the release of the D4 pro camera body!

We go back and forth talking about the new specs and how they translate to us the wedding and portrait photographer. I think Kelly (as a Canon user) has finally felt the pain that we Nikon users have felt for many years now. We certainly didn’t want to piggy-back on too many others details and information but I really think it’s also worth listening to Jared Polin (Fro Know Photo) and his first had review of the new D4 along with checking out nikon usa and nikon rumours for the exact specs and details. That is after you’ve listened to us! lol

Episode 20. Day 2 for us already, and wow, things are hopping here in Vegas! It was another busy day, spent talking to some vendors, and hanging out with some pretty cool photographers, and checking out some presentations.

As we mentioned in the episode, we have had to narrow down the number of vendors we are able to speak with simply due to time. So we found some really cool ones, vendors that we thought would have a product or service that is well suited to the audio podcast, and of course, that were just really cool to talk to. The two that we spoke with for this episode were Justin from Marco Fine Arts Inc. and Rebecca from the Knot. And they were super cool and fun to talk to. Carey’s favourite line is when Justin talks about the “Bambeer”.

Episode 19. Carey and I were in Las Vegas for WPPI 2011, and here is a wrapup from the first day! Vegas is a fun place to be, especially when you get to spend it with 16,000 of your closest friends. We met some great photographers, sat in on some platform presentations for Gene Ho and David McLain, and had a chance to peruse the tradeshow floor and talk with some of the vendors that we felt were really interesting and offered some cool products. We talked with Leon from Colorati, Caitlin from ProDPI, and Rebecca from The Shoppe Designs. All of these companies are great, and we really liked what we saw from them on the tradeshow floor. Episode 18. In this episode, another one of the ‘lost’ files, we discuss bags. Which camera bags do you prefer? How many bags do you have in your arsenal? Carey and I discuss some of the many camera in our closets, and go over some of the favourite ones we have heard of from other photographers we have talked with. Some of the popular ones are Lowepro, Tamrac, Think Tank and Tenba of course, but there are many other bags like the Boda bags, Kelly Moore, and Shootsac’s that have garnered a lot of attention.

The discussion then travelled over to referrals. Lots of useful information here, we hope. This is a few months old…and another podcast that was recorded, saved, and then aged in fine wooden casks to get the best flavor possible. Ha ha. ha.

He is definitely a master when it comes to using light, and we were very excited to hear Joe was coming to our town.

The Lonely Photographers – Episode 14. Workflow revised, pricing, and a little rant from Carey. Here you go, another photography podcast to whet your whistle. First off, let me just say that we occasionally make mistakes. Rarely, but it does happen. And, well, you will see one of these mistakes shortly. We recorded this podcast a little while ago. In fact, shortly after episode 12 was recorded. That wasn’t the mistake. What happened after that was that we misplaced the episode. You could say we lost it, or forgot about it. I like misplaced. The real kicker is that we discussed (on air) the episode number. Episode 13. Maybe that was a sign.

We (and I mean Carey) then found it. Yeah! Only, we found it after we had posted Episode 13 already. The other episode 13. You know, the one where we interviewed Melissa Lui. You see the problem now, right?

So, when you listen to this podcast (and you should, cuz we talk about some really good stuff here) just ignore that beginning portion where we talk about it being Episode 13. It is actually Episode 14. Potato, potato (that just doesn’t work in print…). Well, enjoy the show anyway.

We are regular guys, who have made successful careers in this industry, and all we are doing is sharing with you some of the things to consider, some of the pitfalls that we encountered, and perhaps give you some encouragement along the way. You need to start somewhere, but listening to this podcast may help you prepare for your own journey.
